The Lagos State Government has issued a warning about an imminent building collapse at the Mopol 20 Barracks in Onigbongbo, Ikeja. In response, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) is preparing for an emergency evacuation and demolition of the old Block 3 section of the barracks.
On Wednesday, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, announced that an inspection by the agency’s response team revealed that certain parts of the building are in a dangerously unstable state. To ensure safety, the building and nearby structures will be evacuated immediately to prevent any potential loss of life or property damage.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated, “Our team’s assessment shows that both the building in question and adjacent structures must be evacuated right away. We are implementing a response plan that includes a thorough assessment, orderly evacuation, and controlled demolition.”
Under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, this proactive measure aims to address the building’s hazardous condition and mitigate the risk of secondary incidents. The statement emphasized the urgency of the demolition to prevent further dangers.
The LASEMA official also called on residents in the area to stay calm and avoid spreading unverified information on social media. He assured the public that the situation is being carefully monitored and managed to ensure safety and proper handling of the emergency.
