JAMB bans six CBT officials over exam malpractice

Date:

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has blacklisted six Computer-Based Test (CBT) officials accused of engaging in fraudulent blank registrations during the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration process.

JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, confirmed this development on Monday while addressing journalists after overseeing some CBT centres in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.

Oloyede revealed that the officials, who were employed by JAMB from various institutions, have been permanently banned from participating in any future JAMB-conducted examinations.

“These individuals were caught in alleged examination malpractice,” he said.

“We have their details and will monitor them wherever they go, even if they eventually become professors or are appointed as Vice-Chancellors.”

In addition to the blacklisted officials, Oloyede noted that a senior university official is being prosecuted for crimes related to admissions, and four others are under investigation and placed on JAMB’s watchlist.

Oloyede also addressed other violations during the registration process.

He stated that 10 institutions had been caught conducting registration sessions late at night, with a stern warning issued to prevent further such activities.

He further emphasized that CBT centres must not retain the templates of candidates after registration.

As of Monday afternoon, JAMB had successfully registered 420,674 candidates for the 2025/2026 UTME.

Oloyede also highlighted that on the fifth day of the registration, 32,435 candidates had signed up, bringing the total number of candidates to register for the mock exams to 124,632, with 331 candidates participating in trial testing.

The JAMB registrar reiterated that the board is aiming for a total of two million candidates for the upcoming UTME examination.

In a related development, Oloyede criticised the rising number of underaged registrants, with 4,997 candidates, who will be under 16 by October, already signed up.

He called out parents who push their children to register for the UTME prematurely as a misguided attempt to boost their own reputations.

“We’ve seen a disturbing trend where parents are using their children’s education as a ‘victory medal’ for themselves,” he said.

Despite the growing number of underaged candidates, Oloyede clarified that all underaged registrants must sign an indemnity form, committing to meet academic standards or face penalties for not demonstrating the exceptional intelligence they claim.

During his visit to various CBT centres, including those at Kwara State College of Education, Al-Hikmah University, and the University of Ilorin, Oloyede praised the smooth conduct of the registration process.

“I’m very proud of the work being done in the field by our CBT centres, staff, and everyone involved,” he said.

“The exercise is progressing excellently, and we’ve received strong support from security agencies.”
