In a significant development, US President Donald Trump has revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to enter negotiations aimed at ending the nearly three-year-long war in Ukraine.
The announcement followed a phone call between the two leaders on Wednesday, which marked their first public conversation since Trump assumed the presidency for a second term.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the conversation as “lengthy and highly productive,” stating that both leaders had come to an agreement to initiate immediate discussions to bring the conflict to a close.
“We want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine,” Trump said, emphasizing the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution.
Trump also shared that Putin had echoed the sentiment of his campaign slogan, “COMMON SENSE,” during the call, underscoring their shared belief in its importance in addressing the crisis.
As part of the negotiations, Trump outlined a US negotiating team that would include key figures such as Marco Rubio, Secretary of State; John Ratcliffe, Director of the CIA; Michael Waltz, National Security Adviser; and Steve Witkoff, Ambassador and Special Envoy.
Trump expressed confidence in the potential success of the talks, adding that he and Putin also agreed to visit each other’s countries in the near future.
However, the Ukrainian government has raised concerns over the potential negotiations, particularly regarding the future of US military involvement in Ukraine.
They have voiced apprehension that such talks could pave the way for a reduction in US support, including the possibility of limiting troop deployment.
