The Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has paid tribute to its late leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.
The group hailed Adebanjo for his steadfast commitment to the principles of restructuring, true federalism, and the creation of a Nigeria founded on fairness, equity, and inclusivity for all ethnic groups.
In a statement announcing his passing, Afenifere’s Secretary-General, Chief Sola Ebiseni, highlighted Adebanjo’s pivotal role in advocating for a more just and equitable Nigeria.
“An avowed Awoist and a passionate champion of progressive ideals, Ayo Adebanjo was known for his unyielding pursuit of a Nigeria that embodies fairness, equity, and inclusivity,” Ebiseni remarked.

Adebanjo, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, dedicated much of his life to the fight for restructuring and true federalism, frequently urging his followers to carry on the struggle for a better Nigeria.
Ebiseni recalled that for many years, Adebanjo had openly acknowledged his advancing age, using the metaphor of being at the “departure lounge” to prepare his supporters for the continued fight.
Despite his passing, Ebiseni assured that Afenifere would keep Adebanjo’s legacy alive. “We will undoubtedly keep the banner flying,” he vowed.
Further statements regarding the funeral and tribute arrangements will be issued in due course, in consultation with Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and Adebanjo’s immediate family.
