Chimamanda Adichie overcomes 11 years writer’s block with ‘Dream Count’

Date:

Chimamanda Adichie has finally broken her 11-year silence with a new book, “Dream Count”, a novel that explores the interconnected lives of four women across the US and Nigeria.

In a recent interview with Charlotte Edwards of The Guardian UK, Adichie opened up about her struggles with writer’s block, a phenomenon she’s hesitant to acknowledge due to superstition.

She revealed that her creative drought began after the birth of her daughter, leaving her feeling ‘existentially frightened’ and disconnected from her creative self.

Although she could still write non-fiction, her heart yearned for something more. The passing of her father in 2020 and her mother in 2021 further exacerbated her struggles, making it difficult for her to find the right words.

Interestingly, Adichie’s new book, ‘Dream Count’, was unintentionally inspired by her mother. She only realized the connection when she was nearing completion of the manuscript.

The book delves into themes such as immigration, mother-daughter relationships, and the pressures faced by women.

On a personal note, the author also shared that she’s recently welcomed twin sons, in addition to her 9-year-old daughter.

Despite being private about her personal life, Adichie’s latest interview offers a glimpse into her world, showcasing her resilience and creative spirit.
