Invasion of Lagos Assembly, rape of democracy – Lawmakers

Date:

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have fiercely condemned the early-morning raid of their complex by operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police on Monday, describing the action as a “rape of democracy,” an “aberration,” and a “national embarrassment.”

During a plenary session attended by 36 lawmakers, the Assembly demanded an immediate explanation from the Lagos State DSS Director about the reasons behind the raid.

The lawmakers further called on National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to initiate a prompt investigation into the incident and present a public report on the findings.

Additionally, the Assembly urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene swiftly, emphasizing the need to prevent any further escalation.

In a united front, the lawmakers expressed their outrage, condemning the raid as an abuse of legislative rights and a serious threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.

Hon. Abiodun Tobun, speaking during the session, stated, “This is not a government governed by the barrel of a gun. What happened today is a direct attack on democracy and a step toward anarchy. It is a total embarrassment and an act of harassment.”

He went on to emphasise the Assembly’s unwavering support for the Speaker, adding, “Nobody can dictate to us. God chooses and removes leaders. We stand firm with your leadership, Mr. Speaker—no one can remove you.”

The lawmakers also speculated that powerful and influential individuals or groups might have been behind the invasion, and they called for a thorough investigation to identify those responsible for this alarming act.

In a united front, the House reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the independence of the legislature, ensuring that such actions never compromise the democratic processes within the state.
