The race for the presidency of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has officially begun, with five contenders vying for the coveted position.
In a statement released on Friday, the AfDB revealed the final list of candidates following a two-day meeting of the Steering Committee of the board of governors at the bank’s headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The committee reviewed all applications and confirmed the following candidates for the presidential election, set to take place on May 29: Hott Amadou from Senegal, Maimbo Munzele from Zambia, Tah Ould from Mauritania, Tolli Mahamat from Chad, and Tshabalala Swazi from South Africa.

The upcoming election will determine the successor to Akinwumi Adesina, who has served as AfDB president since 2015.
Adesina, who has overseen significant development initiatives across the continent, reflected on his tenure in a recent interview with Arise Television, stating that he is prepared to serve in any capacity after his term ends.
Describing himself as an instrument of God, Adesina emphasized his unwavering dedication to transforming lives and uplifting communities.
“There’s nothing that makes me happier than seeing people’s lives change for the better,” he shared, underlining his commitment to service whether on a global stage, across Africa, or in Nigeria.
