A Taliban court in Afghanistan’s northern Faryab province publicly flogged a woman for allegedly engaging in an illegitimate relationship and fleeing her home. According to a statement from the Taliban’s Supreme Court on Monday, the woman received 30 lashes and was sentenced to six months in prison.
Under Afghan law, any sexual relationship outside of marriage is considered illegal, and women who flee their homes often face severe punishment, both from the legal system and their families.
In a separate incident over the weekend, the Taliban court in Kandahar province publicly whipped two individuals accused of committing sodomy, the court further revealed.
