Rivers: Wike celebrates Supreme Court Judgement

Date:

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was captured in a video praising God after the Supreme Court’s ruling, which nullified the recent local government elections in Rivers State and upheld the legitimacy of the 27-member Martin Amaewhule-led State Assembly.

Speaking in Abuja after the judgment on Friday, Wike declared that the apex court’s decision has effectively ended the reign of crisis in Rivers State.

The Supreme Court on Friday made the pronouncement stopping the Central Bank of Nigeria from releasing funds to the Rivers State government until the 1999 Constitution properly constituted the Rivers House of Assembly.

A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, declared that no funds should be disbursed to the Rivers State Government until a lawful Appropriation Act is enacted in the state.

Justice Agim specifically upheld the judgment of the Federal High Court, which barred the allocation of funds to the state government.

The apex court also affirmed the Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers House of Assembly members as valid members of the house.

Justice Agim specifically upheld the judgment of the Federal High Court, which barred the allocation of funds to the state government.

The verdict marks a significant turn in the power struggle within Rivers State, which has been embroiled in a leadership tussle following disagreements over the control of the state legislature and local government administration.
