We have not received Assembly’s 48-hour budget ultimatum – Rivers SSG

Date:

The Rivers State Government has clarified that it has not yet received any formal communication regarding the resolution of the House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, following last Friday’s Supreme Court ruling.

Earlier this week, Speaker Amaewhule sent a letter to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging him to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill to the House within 48 hours, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution.

However, in a statement released on Wednesday, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, revealed that the governor had not received the letter, which was reportedly circulated on social media.

Dr. Danagogo’s statement read, “We came across a letter dated 3rd March 2025 regarding this matter on social media.

“As of the close of business on Tuesday, 4th March 2025, the said letter has not been received by the Governor’s office, the Deputy Governor’s office, or the office of the Accountant-General of the State.”

The SSG also noted that the state government had not yet received a certified copy of the Supreme Court judgment, which it needs in order to respond appropriately.

“We have been in touch with our legal team, and we are still awaiting the certified true copy of the Supreme Court’s judgment,” Dr. Danagogo said.

“Once the governor receives the judgment, he will ensure its prompt implementation in the best interests of the people of Rivers State.”

Assuring the public of the governor’s commitment to the rule of law, Dr. Danagogo recalled that Governor Fubara had already expressed his intention to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling.

“As His Excellency stated in his broadcast on Sunday, 2nd March 2025, regardless of his personal views on the Supreme Court judgments, he will respect and implement them in line with the rule of law and for the benefit of Rivers State’s citizens,” he concluded.
