Rivers Assembly adjourns sittings indefinitely after Fubara’s budget presentation request

Date:

In an unexpected turn of events, the Rivers State House of Assembly has adjourned its sittings indefinitely.

The decision was made during a plenary session on Friday, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule in Port Harcourt.

This move comes after Governor Siminalayi Fubara sent a letter to the Speaker, informing him of his intention to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill to the Assembly for consideration and approval.

The governor’s letter, dated March 13, proposed that the budget presentation take place on March 19, 2025, or on another mutually agreed date later in the month, depending on the Assembly’s schedule.

Governor Fubara noted that his decision to present the budget was in compliance with a recent Supreme Court ruling and was also in response to the Assembly’s request for him to re-present the budget.

However, the governor recounted a tense episode when he was denied access to the Assembly complex during a previous attempt to present the budget, despite arriving with his entourage to deliver it at the Assembly Quarters where lawmakers were temporarily seated.
