Another explosion reportedly hits oil facility in Rivers

Date:

Unverified reports indicate another explosion has occurred at an oil facility in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State.

According to a local source, the blast took place early Tuesday morning at a manifold connecting a federal pipeline in the Okwawriwa area.

The informant, who preferred to remain anonymous, claimed that residents in the vicinity were alarmed to find a large fire consuming the facility, which is situated a short distance from nearby homes.

The facility in question is known to transport petroleum products from Seplat, Agip, and Shell, connecting areas in ONELGA and parts of Imo State to Brass in Bayelsa State.

This incident follows closely on the heels of a fire that broke out less than 12 hours earlier on the Trans-Niger Pipeline, operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), which carries oil to Bonny Terminal.

As of now, it remains unclear whether the fires at both locations were caused by human intervention.

The Rivers State police, in a statement concerning the Gokana LGA incident, confirmed they have launched an investigation into the explosion.

Additionally, two individuals have been taken in for questioning regarding the fire on the Trans-Niger Pipeline.
