Rivers women stage rally for state of emergency rule

Date:

A group of women in Port Harcourt staged a public demonstration in support of the recently declared state of emergency in Rivers State.

Clad in white attire and holding placards with messages like “Prosecute Rivers Assembly bombers” and “State of emergency is constitutional,” the women expressed their approval of the emergency declaration and the appointment of Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state’s sole administrator.

They marched through major streets in the city, singing solidarity songs and chanting slogans to show their firm backing of the government’s actions.

This latest demonstration follows an earlier protest on April 11 when women rallied against the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the emergency declaration made by President Bola Tinubu.

The emergency rule, announced on March 18, was triggered by an extended political crisis in the oil-rich state. Alongside Fubara, the president also suspended Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu and the entire state assembly for an initial six-month period.

Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired naval officer, was immediately installed as the interim head of the state administration.
