The Federal Government has appealed to Nigerians living abroad, to return to their homeland and contribute to building a prosperous Nigeria.

This appeal was made by the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, while delivering a lecture at the 12th Convocation of Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, with the theme, “Diaspora Engagements for National Development.”

Dabiri-Erewa emphasised the importance of leveraging the skills and experiences of Nigerians abroad to address the socio-economic challenges facing the nation.

She noted that collaboration between those at home and in the diaspora is crucial, stating that no foreign entity will take the initiative to develop Nigeria.

Dabiri said: “No foreigner would do such for the country if her own people refuse to rise to her developmental challenges.

“The global exposure of Nigerians in the diaspora can be leveraged as a catalyst for national development. This is achievable, and NiDCOM is set to actualise this.”

In his remarks, Afe Babalola, founder of the university, praised Dabiri-Erewa for her insightful lecture, which he deemed essential for fostering sustainable development with support from the diaspora.

He encouraged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to resist the temptation of seeking opportunities abroad, underscoring the country’s abundant human and natural resources.

Babalola reiterated the university’s impact on education and health sectors over the past 15 years, asserting its recognition as one of the best institutions globally.

“Africans are destined to lead the world,” he declared, expressing pride in the achievements of his students and their potential to contribute to the nation’s greatness.
