Insecurity: Niger govt imposes 6pm to 6am curfew on Okada, Keke operations

Date:

The Niger State Government has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on commercial motorcycle (Okada) and tricycle (Keke NAPEP) operations in Minna, the state capital.

The restriction, effective from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily, is part of heightened security measures aimed at curbing rising insecurity.

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago announced the new directive during a security stakeholders’ meeting in Minna, warning that recent violence and loss of lives demand urgent action.

“Only those seeking urgent medical care are exempt,” the governor said, stressing that the safety of residents is the government’s top priority.

Bago further instructed security agencies to arrest anyone found in possession of weapons, declaring such individuals as armed robbers.

He also issued a stern warning against any attempts to confront or intimidate law enforcement officers, saying such actions would be treated as attacks on the state itself.

As part of a broader crackdown, the governor ordered the arrest of individuals wearing dreadlocks, directing that their hair be cut and fines imposed.

He urged parents to caution their children, warning that anyone caught flouting the new rules would face strict penalties.

“This is 100 percent enforcement. It’s fire for fire. Enough is enough,” Bago declared, vowing that his administration would not tolerate further threats to peace and security.
