The Federal Government has outlined its decision to install solar panels at the Aso Rock Villa, the nation’s seat of power.
Mustapha Abdulahi, Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, explained that it is financially unsustainable for the Aso Rock Villa to continue incurring approximately ₦47 billion annually in electricity bills.
This is why President Bola Tinubu approved ₦10 billion for the installation of a solar power grid to supply energy to the presidential villa.

Speaking to the press on Friday, Abdulahi emphasised that the initiative aligns with the President’s goal of diversifying Nigeria’s energy sources and reducing the cost of governance.
He added that the solar power project will provide reliable, clean energy, create jobs, encourage innovation among Nigerian engineers and energy professionals, and ease the pressure on the national power grid.
Additionally, he noted that innovations by the current administration have piqued the interest of development partners, who have committed about $5.3 billion in investments, particularly for grid expansion projects in Nigeria’s power sector.
