Late drama as Bournemouth held to 1-1 draw by Man United

Date:

Bournemouth were left frustrated after surrendering a late equaliser to Manchester United, drawing 1-1 in a tense encounter at the Vitality Stadium.

The full-time whistle was met with boos from the home crowd, as Andoni Iraola’s side suffered a bitter blow in their pursuit of European qualification.

The Cherries took a deserved lead in the first half when Antoine Semenyo lashed a powerful effort into the net, finishing off a clever backheel assist from Evanilson inside the penalty area.

Bournemouth continued their momentum after the break, with Dango Ouattara coming agonisingly close to doubling the advantage when his free-kick rattled the crossbar, leaving United goalkeeper André Onana stranded.

However, the match turned dramatically midway through the second half. Evanilson, initially shown a yellow card for a collision with Manchester United’s Noussair Mazraoui, saw his punishment upgraded to a straight red following a VAR review by referee Peter Bankes.

The sending-off left Bournemouth a man down, shifting the momentum firmly in the visitors’ favour. With the numerical advantage, Manchester United pressed relentlessly for an equaliser.

Their efforts finally paid off deep into stoppage time when Rasmus Højlund reacted quickest to a loose ball, turning in Manuel Ugarte’s shot from close range to snatch a point.

The result leaves Bournemouth still sitting in 10th place, with their hopes of securing a European spot next season now in jeopardy.

Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United side remain 14th, and their focus now shifts towards their upcoming UEFA Europa League semi-final first-leg clash against Athletic Club.

Statistics from the match highlighted Bournemouth’s struggles in attack, with an expected goals (xG) tally of just 0.67, compared to United’s more impressive 2.44, underlining the visitors’ greater threat in front of goal.
