U.S. seeks tariff talks with China amid escalating trade war

Date:

American officials have reached out to their Chinese counterparts to initiate discussions over steep tariffs that have disrupted global markets and supply chains, according to a Chinese media outlet with ties to the government.

The outlet, Yuyuan Tantian — affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV — reported on Thursday that Washington is actively pursuing talks through “multiple channels.”

The report cited unnamed sources and described the U.S. as being “the more anxious party” in the negotiations.

Since April, the United States has imposed tariffs of up to 145% on a range of Chinese goods, prompting Beijing to retaliate with its own 125% duties on American imports.

“The Trump administration is under mounting pressure,” the outlet noted in a post on Weibo, a Chinese social media platform similar to X (formerly Twitter).

President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that China is eager to strike a deal. On Wednesday, he said there was a “very good chance” of an agreement, but emphasized, “We’re going to make it on our terms, and it’s got to be fair,” during a town hall event hosted by NewsNation.

Despite Trump’s claims, Beijing has publicly denied that any talks are currently underway. Still, Chinese officials have consistently called for dialogue based on “fairness, respect, and reciprocity.”

However, they have also pledged to stand firm. A video released this week by China’s foreign ministry declared the country would “never kneel down” in the face of a trade war.
