Catholic Bishops slam Trump’s AI-generated ‘Pope’ image

Date:

The New York State Catholic Conference, which serves as the public policy voice for the state’s Catholic bishops, has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump after he posted an image appearing to show himself dressed as the Pope, which many suspect was generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

On Saturday, the Conference took to X to condemn the post, stating: “There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr President. We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St Peter. Do not mock us.”

The image—initially shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform—drew a wave of reactions ranging from amusement to outrage.

The altered picture depicted Trump wearing full papal attire, including traditional white robes, a golden crucifix, and a mitre, with one finger pointed toward the sky.

It was later reposted by the White House’s official X account.

This development follows recent remarks by Trump in which he quipped to reporters, “I’d like to be pope, that would be my number one choice,” when asked about his preferred candidate for the papacy.

Trump made the comment shortly before the College of Cardinals began the conclave to select a successor to Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025 at the age of 88.

Though he did not officially endorse anyone, Trump did hint at a favorable opinion of a cardinal from New York—widely interpreted as a reference to Archbishop Timothy Dolan, known for his firm pro-life stance and traditional views.

Trump was also present at the funeral of Pope Francis last week, marking his first overseas trip since resuming office.
