Nigerian chess maestro and coach Tunde Onakoya, who recently made global headlines by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon chess game, has received a car gift from Nigerian automotive company Nord Motion — a brand-new Nord A9 SUV.
Onakoya, who is also the founder and convener of Chess in Slums Africa, took to his verified X account on Thursday to reveal the gift from his “Nord Motion family” in recognition of his inspiring contributions to chess, education, and community development in underserved communities.

“Just got home to the most heartwarming surprise from my @nordmotion family—the stunning new Nord A9 SUV,” Onakoya wrote. “Hands down the most beautiful car I’ve ever owned, but even more beautiful is the love behind this incredible gift. Grateful beyond words.”

Breakingng.com recalls that in April 21, 2025 Onakoya, was officially acknowledged by Guinness World Records for completing the world’s longest chess marathon.
Onakoya, 30, accomplished this incredible feat with a continuous 64-hour chess session held in New York City’s iconic Times Square.
Onakoya has become a national icon for his work through Chess in Slums Africa, a non-profit initiative dedicated to empowering children in marginalized communities across Nigeria by teaching them life skills and critical thinking through the game of chess.

His efforts have not only elevated the visibility of chess in Africa but have also brought hope and opportunity to hundreds of children living in poverty.
His recognition by the Guinness World Record further cemented his status as a global symbol of endurance, brilliance, and altruism.

The Nord A9 SUV, a flagship model known for its luxury, performance, and stylish design, serves as a fitting tribute to a man who has turned the classic board game into a transformative tool for social change.
Nord Motion, a proudly Nigerian automotive brand, has previously supported local talent and innovators, and this gesture underscores its commitment to celebrating homegrown excellence.
