The 133 Cardinal electors who gathered in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel on Thursday have reportedly elected the new Pope.

The development was confirmed by the sighting of white smoke from a chimney above the Sistine Chapel, signalling the dawn of a new pontiff.

The Vatican further confirmed the news via a post on its official X account, writing, “White smoke! The 133 Cardinal electors gathered in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel have elected the new Pope.

“He will appear soon at the central window of St. Peter’s Basilica.”
