Stray bullet kills WAEC student during police chase in Ibadan

Date:

A tragic incident occurred in Ibadan on Tuesday morning when a stray bullet, allegedly fired by a police officer during a high-speed pursuit, struck and killed a student preparing to sit for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams.

The fatal shooting took place along the Gbagi Market Road, where police were reportedly chasing a vehicle suspected to be linked to internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as “Yahoo Boys.”

In the course of the operation, a bullet intended for the fleeing suspects inadvertently hit the student, who was on a motorcycle with his twin brother.

The teenager, who was en route to his examination centre, was rushed to Welfare Hospital. However, medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.

In the aftermath of the incident, an outraged crowd—including traders and sympathisers—transported the victim’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat in protest. Their demand was clear: justice and accountability for the young life lost.

Security operatives were promptly deployed to the entrance of the secretariat to prevent escalation, as demonstrators called for immediate reforms in police engagement rules and transparent investigation into the matter.

The Oyo State Police Command and the state government had yet to release any official statements concerning the fatal shooting.
