Officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps have apprehended a man, Ogunbadejo Olawale, for illegally dumping refuse by the roadside in the Alapere area of the state.
The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the arrest in a statement posted on his official X handle on Wednesday.
According to Wahab, Olawale was caught in the act following coordinated surveillance efforts and tips from concerned residents. He described the incident as a blatant violation of the state’s environmental laws.

“This arrest is part of our ongoing commitment to enforce sanitation regulations and uphold a cleaner Lagos,” Wahab said. “The suspect will face prosecution in line with existing environmental statutes.”
He emphasized that the illegal disposal of waste not only threatens public health but also undermines the state’s broader efforts to maintain a livable and sustainable urban environment.
Wahab praised members of the community for their active involvement in reporting infractions, noting that public participation has been vital in the state’s cleanliness campaign.
“Dear Lagosians, your vigilance and cooperation have been instrumental. Together, we’re building a resilient and environmentally conscious city that future generations will be proud to inherit,” he said.
The Commissioner also reaffirmed the government’s determination to continue enforcing environmental laws while ramping up public awareness and community engagement.
“Our mission for a #CleanerLagos is unwavering. Enforcement and education will go hand in hand as we push forward,” Wahab added.
