Fear not, PDP not dying, says Abba Moro

Date:

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has dismissed widespread claims suggesting the imminent disintegration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that Nigeria is far from becoming a one-party nation.

Speaking on Saturday at the PDP North Central Zonal Congress held in Jos, Plateau State, Moro expressed optimism about the party’s future, highlighting that the newly elected leaders will revitalize the platform.

According to him, “It has been a very successful event. You can see the enthusiasm; delegates from across the Zone, including the FCT, are excited and happy that the exercises are taking place today…”

Moro added that the zonal congress is part of broader efforts to stabilize the party following internal disputes, and that a new leadership structure is gradually taking shape through congresses at different administrative levels.

He stated, “The Party will continue to grow stronger… I can confidently assure you that the PDP is not collapsing, contrary to insinuations.”

Moro also waved aside fears of Nigeria becoming a one-party system. While acknowledging the impact of recent defections, he said the PDP remains capable of reorganizing and reclaiming lost ground.

“I have no fear of Nigeria becoming a one-party state. Not at all… I am confident that the PDP is coming back stronger.”

In his address at the same event, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang emphasized the importance of adhering to democratic principles and constitutional mandates in running the party’s affairs.

He said, “Democracy is the foundation of our governance, and that is why we continue to uphold our Constitution by ensuring that elections are held periodically, as enshrined in that sacred document…”

Governor Mutfwang praised outgoing officials and encouraged new leaders to maintain integrity and transparency.

He expressed deep gratitude to aspirants who stepped down to allow a smoother transition, calling their gesture an act of maturity and selflessness.

“You’ve demonstrated that the interest and survival of the Party is greater than any personal ambition… I thank you for making this process seamless,” he added.

In a passionate appeal, Mutfwang urged members to embrace self-sacrifice for the greater good of the PDP and reiterated that the party’s strength lies in the support and belief of the people.

“The PDP belongs to the people. The people love the PDP, and we must do everything in our power to ensure that power truly belongs to them.”

He concluded with a message of confidence in the region’s commitment to Nigeria’s democratic development: “I believe the PDP in the North Central will continue to thrive, grow stronger, and remain steadfast…”

As of the time this report was compiled, voting had ended and officials were counting ballots.
