Salah makes Premier League history with golden boot, playmaker awards

Date:

Mohamed Salah has etched his name even deeper into Premier League history books by securing both the Golden Boot and Playmaker awards for the 2024/25 season—an exceptional achievement that highlights his all-round attacking prowess.

The Golden Boot, awarded to the Premier League’s top scorer, was clinched by Salah after he netted his 29th goal of the campaign in Liverpool’s season-ending 1-1 stalemate against Crystal Palace.

That goal sealed his place at the top of the scoring charts, leaving Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak trailing by six goals.

Remarkably, this is the fourth time Salah has claimed the top scorer title in the English top flight, a feat that sees him draw level with Arsenal icon Thierry Henry for the most Golden Boot wins in Premier League history.

Salah didn’t just stop at scoring goals—he also topped the assists chart, earning the Playmaker award with a remarkable tally of 18 assists. That’s six more than Newcastle’s Jacob Murphy, who was his closest competitor in that category. This season marks the second instance in which Salah has dominated both categories in the same campaign.

He first accomplished this rare double in the 2021/22 season, finishing with 23 goals and 13 assists. Before Salah, only one other player—Harry Kane in 2020/21 with Tottenham Hotspur—had ever led the league in both scoring and assists simultaneously, with 23 goals and 14 assists.

Although players like Andrew Cole (1993/94 with Newcastle) and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (1998/99 with Leeds) led in both goals and assists in earlier eras, the Playmaker award was only formally introduced in 2017/18, making Salah’s official recognition all the more significant.

In a further milestone, Salah has become the first footballer ever to collect the Golden Boot, Playmaker award, and the EA SPORTS Player of the Season award in a single campaign.

He was announced as the 2024/25 EA SPORTS Player of the Season over the weekend, joining an elite group of players—Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidić, and Kevin De Bruyne—as the only individuals to win that particular award more than once.

Salah’s final-day goal also brought his total goal involvements—goals plus assists—to 47 for the season, equaling the Premier League single-season record.

That figure matches the benchmark set by Alan Shearer (1994/95) and Andrew Cole (1993/94), though both achieved their tallies during 42-game seasons, compared to today’s 38-match format.

Salah’s consistency, creativity, and clinical edge continue to redefine excellence in the Premier League, and this season stands as perhaps his most complete performance yet.
