Man United end forgettable season with win over Aston Villa

Date:

Manchester United wrapped up a disappointing Premier League season on a positive note, defeating Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa 2-0 in front of a relieved home crowd at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils, finishing a dismal 15th, put in one of their better displays of the campaign. They were the brighter side in the opening half and were handed a significant advantage when Villa’s Lisandro Martínez was shown a straight red card just before the break for a reckless challenge.

Though United’s first-half dominance didn’t translate into goals, they eventually broke the deadlock in the second half. Amad Diallo headed home shortly after a controversial VAR decision denied Villa a potential opener.

Christian Eriksen added a second from the penalty spot, marking what could be his farewell appearance with a composed finish.

United’s 2.86 xG compared to Villa’s 0.40 underlined the one-sided nature of the contest. Despite the loss, Villa still finish sixth and have secured another European campaign, capping off a season that included a thrilling Champions League quarter-final run.

With speculation surrounding a managerial shakeup, all eyes now turn to Ruben Amorim, who is expected to lead the club into a much-needed rebuild.
