Chaos erupts at Atiku, Obi coalition meeting in Abuja

Date:

A political gathering convened in Abuja to strategize a united opposition front against the All Progressives Congress (APC) descended into chaos following a dispute among some attendees.

The meeting, which took place on Sunday at the Abuja Continental Hotel, brought together several prominent political figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), alongside other opposition leaders.

Footage from the event, widely shared on social media, captured the moment tensions flared and the atmosphere in the hall turned turbulent, with delegates engaged in a fierce verbal confrontation.

A large group of attendees surged toward the podium, shouting and arguing, disrupting the flow of the event.

According to a report by Punch, the disorder began when Babachir Lawal introduced a representative to speak for Jigawa State, a move that sparked backlash from other delegates from the same state.

In protest, the Jigawa delegates stormed the podium, blocking the proposed speaker and insisting on selecting their own representative.

The disruption prompted swift intervention from security personnel, including officers of the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), who moved in to de-escalate the situation and safeguard high-profile participants.

Following the restoration of order, consensus was reached, and Mustapha Lamido—the son of former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido—along with another delegate, was selected to speak on behalf of the state.
