AFCON Qualifiers: CAF awards 3 points to Nigeria, fines Libya $50,000

Date:

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted Nigeria three points and three goals for the abandoned Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya.

This decision comes after an investigation by the CAF Disciplinary Board into the events surrounding the October 15 match in Benghazi.

The Super Eagles withdrew from the game after enduring poor treatment in Libya, including being stranded at an abandoned airport for nearly 24 hours.

In its ruling, CAF found that the Libya Football Federation had violated Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. The official five-point decision includes:

“The Libya Football Federation breached Article 31 of the African Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

Match No. 87 between Libya and Nigeria, scheduled for October 15, 2024, in Benghazi, is forfeited by Libya, with a score of 3-0 awarded to Nigeria.

The Libya Football Federation is fined $50,000.

The fine must be paid within 60 days of the decision’s notification.

All other motions or requests for further action are dismissed. “

CAF President Patrice Motsepe had previously emphasized that the organization would not tolerate any form of unsportsmanlike conduct or unfair treatment in African football.

As a result of the ruling, Nigeria now holds 10 points from four matches and remains at the top of Group D.
