Sunday Oliseh appointed to global football lawmakers board, IFAB

Date:

Former Nigerian international footballer, Sunday Oliseh, has been appointed to the prestigious International Football Association Board (IFAB), the global body responsible for defining and regulating the laws of football.

Announcing the development via his X account on Monday, Oliseh expressed immense gratitude and excitement over the new role.

“Thrilled to announce my appointment to the International Football Association Board (IFAB)!” he stated.

“IFAB is the global guardian of football’s laws, responsible for determining the laws of football, shaping the beautiful game for players and fans worldwide. Honored to contribute to its mission!”

IFAB, which was founded in 1886, is composed of representatives from the four British football associations—England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland—as well as FIFA, and is widely recognized as the sole authority when it comes to the Laws of the Game.

Oliseh’s appointment is a major milestone for Nigeria and African football as a whole, given the board’s significant influence on how the game is played globally—from grassroots matches to elite international tournaments.

The 50-year-old former midfielder, known for his sharp tactical mind and leadership during his playing days, is expected to bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the board’s deliberations.

His inclusion underscores IFAB’s growing interest in ensuring broader representation and inclusivity in its policy-making processes.

While IFAB traditionally meets to review and amend the laws of the game annually, members also engage in ongoing consultations about technology, player safety, officiating standards, and the integrity of the sport.

Oliseh’s voice will now be part of these critical global conversations.

His announcement has been met with widespread congratulations from the Nigerian football community and beyond, with many hailing the appointment as a win not only for Nigeria but for African football development.
