Nigeria defeats Ghana 2–1 to reach Unity Cup final

Date:

Nigeria edged past regional rivals Ghana with a 2-1 win on Tuesday at the Gtech Community Stadium, securing a place in the final of the Unity Cup.

The Super Eagles took control early in the first half.

Rangers FC forward Cyriel Dessers opened the scoring in the 14th minute, skillfully bringing down a cross inside the penalty area before rifling home a right-footed effort past Ghana’s goalkeeper Asare.

Moments later, Nigeria extended their advantage through an own goal. A well-delivered free-kick into the box led to a miscalculation by Ghanaian defender Razak Simpson, who headed the ball into his own net, giving Nigeria a 2-0 cushion.

Ghana responded in the 70th minute when Brandon Thomas-Asante found the net. He finished a low cross from the left flank to reduce the deficit and give his side a lifeline.

Despite late pressure from the Black Stars, Nigeria held their ground to see out the match.

With this result, the Super Eagles have booked a spot in the tournament’s final where they are set to face Jamaica on May 31.
