The Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA), Ibadan, Oyo State, has been temporarily closed for upgrade, as announced by the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
This closure is part of the state government’s initiative to upgrade the airport from a domestic to an international airport, with various improvements and remodeling works underway.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN, Obiageli Orah, who said the federal government approved the airport‘s temporary closure due to ongoing works.
She said “Following the approval, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has shut down the runway and the airport in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations.
“As part of the Oyo state government’s initiative to upgrade Ibadan Airport from a domestic to an international airport, various improvements and remodeling works are currently underway.
“In compliance with aviation safety recommended standards and processes, the closure became imperative to ensure the safety of passengers as well as airport personnel.”
The upgrade details are:
- New terminal: Construction of a new terminal building
- Runway upgrade: Renovation and expansion of the existing runway
- Structural features: Other structural improvements to enhance airport safety and efficiency
The closure is expected to last for six months, as announced by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on February 28.
FAAN has appealed for understanding and cooperation from stakeholders and airport users during this period.
