The Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood, is thrown into mourning as veteran Nollywood actress, Nkechi Nweje, has sadly passed on due to complications from a stomach surgery she underwent in November 2024.
This was disclosed by movie producer, Stanley Ontop, who shared a heartfelt tribute to Nkechi on Instagram, describing her as his ‘best friend and mentor’.
Stanley recalled their last conversation during the “Queenth saga,” where she advised him to stop. He ended the post by saying, “I am still speechless”.
“Nollywood in tears as we lost one of our vibrant Nollywood actress @nkechi.nweje after a brief illness. Couldn’t post since morning because it was like a dream to me.
“Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha, rest in peace ma’am, my best friend, she always calls me on phone advising me. The last time we spoke was during Queenth saga, she said Ontop stop. Am still speechless.”
According to Stanley, Nkechi had been healing well after the surgery, but recently started experiencing pains again, which ultimately led to her passing.
Nkechi had a remarkable career in Nollywood, spanning over decades and featuring in over 100 movies.
She was particularly known for her impressive portrayal of mother characters and her versatility in acting.
