Grammy Award-winning singer, Burna Boy, has cautioned his colleagues against relying solely on revenue from Nigerian streams.
In a recent Instagram post, Burna Boy highlighted the significant disparity in revenue generated from Nigerian streams compared to those from the UK, US, and Europe.
According to Burna Boy, having a song reach number one in Nigeria on any streaming platform is not a significant achievement.
He emphasized that Nigerian fans cannot fill a stadium anywhere in the world and advised artists to aim higher or diversify their income streams.
“Dear artists, don’t be fooled by Twitter polls or Nigerian social media fans. They won’t fill a stadium for you anywhere in the world,” he said.
Burna Boy shared the estimated revenue from 1 million streams in different regions:
- Nigeria: $300-$400
- UK: £3,000-£4,000
- US: $3,000-$4,000
- Europe: €3,000-€4,000
The singer encouraged artists to look beyond Nigerian streams and strive for international recognition.
Burna Boy’s advice comes as he continues to make waves globally, including winning the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album and being named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2024.
