Chidimma Adetshina makes history as Miss Universe 2024 first runner-up

Date:

Chidimma Adetshina, the reigning Miss Universe Nigeria, has etched her name in history by becoming the first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant, held on Sunday in Mexico City.

Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, emerged victorious, claiming the coveted crown in a spectacular grand finale.

Joining Adetshina and Theilvig in the top 12 were contestants from Bolivia, Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Russia, Chile, Thailand, Canada, and Peru.

Adetshina’s remarkable ascent was defined by her grace and intelligence, particularly her thoughtful responses on diversity and respect for humanity. Advancing from the top 30 to the top five, she eventually became one of the final two contestants vying for the crown.

Although her performance was extraordinary, Theilvig ultimately took the title, succeeding Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua, Miss Universe 2023.

Adetshina’s journey to the global stage was not without challenges. Born to a Nigerian father and Mozambican mother, she faced criticism and withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant due to questions about her nationality. However, the Silverbird Group, organisers of Miss Universe Nigeria, invited her to participate, leading to her national victory and subsequent representation of Nigeria at the international level.

Her achievement as first runner-up is a landmark moment for Nigeria, celebrating her as a symbol of resilience and excellence in the country’s pageant history.
