Renowned Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has encouraged young women to make deliberate and wise choices when selecting life partners, cautioning against decisions driven by fear, urgency, or societal expectations.
Speaking during a recent event with students, the celebrated author highlighted the significance of partnering with someone who embodies kindness and support.

“It’s really important who you choose. It’s really important. Young women, choose wisely,” Adichie said.
She went on to acknowledge the pressures some women face, noting that emotional needs or social timelines can lead to settling for the wrong person.
“Sometimes as young women, you can tell that the person you’re with is not really a good person, but you’re desperate to get married.
“You’re desperate to have somebody who’s your partner. Don’t settle. Be very careful who you choose.
“The person you choose as your life partner will make a huge difference in your life.
“If you choose somebody who’s kind, supportive, it will make all the difference. So I can tell you that I chose well, there are some good men left.”
Adichie, the author of bestsellers such as Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun, has been married to Dr. Ivara Esege since 2009. They are parents to a daughter and twin sons.
Her remarks follow her recent revelation about reclaiming her cultural identity by embracing her Igbo name “Chimamanda,” after feeling disconnected from her birth name.
