Reekado Banks: What I’ve learnt since leaving Mavin Records

Date:

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Reekado Banks has opened up about his personal and professional growth following his departure from Mavin Records in 2018.

In a recent appearance on The Esther Show, the music star shared how leaving the label marked a pivotal point in his journey towards maturity, accountability, and independence.

Speaking candidly, Banks noted that the experience of going solo taught him crucial life lessons.

He acknowledged that remaining under the wings of the prominent record label for a longer period might have made him complacent and less inclined to take full responsibility for his actions.

Reflecting on his exit, Reekado Banks expressed appreciation for the foundation Mavin Records and Don Jazzy provided at the beginning of his career.

However, he stressed that venturing out on his own offered him the opportunity to discover the true demands of the music business and pushed him to develop a stronger sense of self-discipline.

He said, “I do not think I would have gathered as much knowledge as I have now. Yeah, because I would be absolutely catered to and, you know, I would feel entitled.”

“You know, I would feel entitled to certain successes, certain. I feel like I would not take the blame for my failures. I would blame it on the label.”

“So now I have absolute knowledge of what it takes. I have absolute knowledge of what they did for me. I do appreciate the label. But back then, you feel like maybe you probably wouldn’t have.”

“If I stayed much longer, it would be like, I’m under the biggest label, so whatever little thing I do should count. But now I know what I am, I know exactly what I am doing.”

Following his departure from Mavin, Reekado Banks pursued different ventures and collaborations. Some of those efforts, he admitted, did not produce the expected results. Nonetheless, those challenges served as valuable learning experiences. Now, he’s channeling his focus into a new chapter: his own music label, which he launched in 2024.

He explained, “And then I had to get into a different partnership. Had an issue with the partner. And then I am standing on my own. Yeah. But that did not work out.”

“It did not work out as well as I wanted it. Now, I’m in partnership with God,” he added.
