Controversial rapper Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been granted bail after nearly a month in police custody, his counsel Stanley Alieke confirmed on Monday.
Mr Alieke announced the development on Instagram, writing, “Apki has been granted bail by the court,” though he refrained from providing further details.
The rapper was arrested on November 27 during a performance in Owerri, Imo State over allegations tied to his criticism of Afrofusion star Burna Boy. According to Darlington’s legal team, his arrest stemmed from comments he made about Burna Boy’s association with embattled US rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs who is facing allegations of sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
Despite his detention, Darlington vowed not to back down from criticising Burna Boy. His lawyer Deji Adeyanju previously disclosed that legal action had been taken to secure his release, emphasising that the rapper would either be arraigned within 48 hours or granted bail.
“Our FREP application for Speed Darlington has been granted by the court,” Adeyanju said earlier. “Issues around injustice may take time but justice will always prevail.”
