Grammy-winning singer, Tems, has called on the world to look beyond stereotypes and explore the rich cultures of Africa, particularly in Nigeria and Ghana.
Speaking at the 2025 Met Gala in New York, Tems encouraged foreigners to visit Lagos and Ghana to form true understanding of life in Africa.
Tems highlighted the continent’s beauty lies in its creativity, daily efforts, fashion, music, traditions, and cultures.
She emphasized that Africa has much more to offer beyond common perceptions, saying, “I think the beauty of Africa is in the creativity, the daily efforts, the looks, the songs, the traditions, and the cultures.”
Tems also shed light on the diversity of African music, which extends far beyond Afrobeats. She mentioned genres such as Amapiano, Afrosoul, R&B, and Afro Jazz, stating, “We Africans can go further in every single aspect of sound. We are not just Afrobeats.”
Tems believes that experiencing Africa firsthand will change perceptions and showcase the continent’s true beauty.
She encourages people to visit and see for themselves, saying, “Just go and see for yourself before you make an opinion about Africa. See it for yourself and see how you feel.”
