Alleged Cybercrime: Court grants Sowore ₦10m bail

Date:

Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and activist, has been granted ₦10 million bail, with one surety in like sum.

According to Channels TV, the surety must be a responsible individual with landed property of equivalent value and must present the property’s original documentation and a passport photograph to the court registrar.

Justice Musa Liman, who decided on the bail motion, also ordered Sowore to hand over his international passport to the court.

He was given 24 hours to satisfy his bail terms or be placed in police detention.

This decision came after the court adjourned ruling on Sowore’s bail application to Thursday (today), following arguments from Sowore’s counsel, Marshall Abubakar, and prosecution counsel, Udey Jonathan.

Sowore, who faces 17 counts of cybercrime charges brought by the Nigerian Police, had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The charges stem from an alleged tweet by Sowore in which he referred to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as the “illegal IGP.”

The police claim that the statement was false and intended to incite public disorder.

Sowore’s lawyer had urged the court to grant release on liberal terms, but the prosecution objected, asking rigorous conditions to secure his attendance at trial.
