A Magistrate’s Court in Ado-Ekiti has granted human rights activist, Dele Farotimi, bail in the sum of N30 million.
Former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, stated this on Friday in a social media post.
The bail conditions include a N30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must be a property owner), the submission of his passport and a restriction on granting media interviews.
Farotimi is being prosecuted for allegedly defaming a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afe Babalola.
At the court’s last sitting, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun reserved ruling on the lawyer’s bail application till December 20 and ordered that he should be remanded in prison.
Farotimi’s counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, argues that the charge against Farotimi is unknown to law and the offence of defamation is not recognised under the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
