Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid, even as his father aligns with the opposition.
Bello, who represents Kaduna North in the House of Representatives, made his position clear at the APC National Summit in Abuja, where party leaders endorsed Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
His stance comes in sharp contrast to that of his father, Nasir El-Rufai, who resigned from the APC in March 2025, citing a loss of confidence in the party’s values.

The former governor has since joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and vowed to lead a united opposition front to defeat the APC in 2027.
The younger El-Rufai’s support for Tinubu has stirred mixed reactions, especially from political observers. Social commentator Reno Omokri took a jab at the elder El-Rufai, posting on social media: “If El-Rufai can’t convince his own son to leave Tinubu, how will he convince Nigerians?”
This political rift within the El-Rufai family is not new.
In 2024, Bashir El-Rufai, another son of the former governor, openly criticised President Tinubu and Kaduna Governor Uba Sani, predicting both would lose their positions in the next election.
He also dismissed the ongoing probe into his father’s administration particularly over allegations surrounding the N423 billion debt as politically driven.
In a post on X , Bashir wrote: “Nobody is too big to be elected out of office by the people. It will happen, and wallahi, nothing will happen. Let us be patient.”
The contrasting positions of the El-Rufai family have added another layer of intrigue to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of 2027.
