Former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC now Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)), Professor Humphrey Nwosu, has died aged 83.
The professor of political science died on Thursday in a hospital in Virginia, United States of America.
He was in charge of NEC from 1989 to 1993.
Following his appointment by then Military President Ibrahim Babangida, Nwosu conducted the June 12, 1993 election which is seen as the most credible in the history of Nigeria.
The presidential election was won by Moshood Abiola, candidate of the Social Democratic Party, defeating Bashir Tofa, candidate of the National Republican Convention. However, Babangida annulled the election.
Born on October 2, 1941 in Anambra, Nwosu brought a few innovations into the nation’s electoral process. One of such was the introduction of Option A4 voting system and the open ballot system.
The Option A4 was a direct queuing behind candidates of choice during either party primaries or general elections.
