Fire incident: Lagos blue line rail resumes

Date:

The Lagos Blue Line rail has resumed operations following a minor fire incident on a section of its track on Saturday. Gboyega Akosile, spokesperson for Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, confirmed that the fire occurred at 4:12 pm.

According to Akosile, the fire was a minor incident, and no injuries were reported as the train was not in service at the time.

Shortly after the incident, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) issued a statement saying engineers were working to replace the damaged cables.

“LAMATA is aware of a spark that caused a fire on a section of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) near the old NEPA station by Eko Bridge around the Apongbon area of Lagos Island,” the statement on X said. “As a result, passenger operations on the Blue Line were temporarily disrupted. The system automatically isolated the affected section, allowing investigators and engineers from the Independent Power Plant to locate the source of the fire.”

LAMATA added that a closed-circuit camera had quickly alerted emergency personnel, who activated the response procedures.

By Sunday morning, the necessary repairs were completed, and operations resumed. Jubril Gawat, the Lagos governor’s senior special assistant on new media, posted a video clip of the Blue Line train running along the repaired tracks.

“Earlier this morning on the Blue Line Rail track after the repairs of the minor fire incident yesterday,” he noted in a post on X.

He also mentioned that additional maintenance and troubleshooting were still ongoing.
