President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), following her Senate confirmation on 25 September 2024.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, on Monday, where Justice Kekere-Ekun took the oath of office and signed the oath register. She succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who retired on 22 August 2024 after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The event was attended by several notable figures, including three of Kekere-Ekun’s predecessors: Justice Aloma Mukhtar, Nigeria’s first female CJN; Justice Mahmud Mohammed; Justice Walter Onnoghen; and her immediate predecessor, Justice Ariwoola. Members of her family and other Supreme Court justices were also present.
This marks the second time in five weeks that Kekere-Ekun has taken the oath of office. She was first sworn in by President Tinubu on 23 August 2024 in an acting capacity, pending her Senate confirmation.
