Mixed reactions as Nasarawa lecturer goes viral for dancing with students on TikTok

Date:

Ochanya Lamai, a female lecturer at the Nasarawa State University’s Mass Communication Department, has received mixed reactions online after getting recognition on TikTok for actively partaking in viral trends with her students.

Lamai, whose TikTok handle is @ochanyalamai, has more than 19,700 followers.

Her work, which playfully depicts life in a higher education setting, has been a source of enjoyment for many people on the platform.

The self-proclaimed “Mummy Gen-Z” describes as a content creator, music lover, broadcaster, entrepreneur, and educator. Her active online presence and strong relationship with students have won her both praise and criticism.

While many praise her for bringing joy to netizens and breaking the stereotype of the conventional Nigerian lecturer, others have criticised her for what they see as a deviation from academic decorum.

Despite the mixed reactions, Lamai continues to receive overwhelming support from Nigerians on TikTok, who admire her unmatched energy and her ability to use social media creatively to inform, educate, and entertain.

In one of her videos, she subtly addressed critics who questioned her decision to become a content creator.

You cannot shame the shameless, you gats work on yourself…”

Lamai’s frequent appearances alongside her students in TikTok videos have drawn even more attention, with many Nigerians finding her close bond with them unusual for someone in an academic role.

Her relaxed and approachable style, though seen as unorthodox by some, has helped her stand out in the online space.

A TikTok user, Boyce Iyamah reacted to one of her contents on selection of project topics and frowned at the expression of a lecturer’s cluelessness.

He said,”I am a Lecturer too, but you are painting the wrong picture.”

@stone_ _xxl said,” I wish I was in this school and this department, to graduate no go even sweet me”

On one of the lecturer’s dance posts, Tonia_ify commented that,” I think this woman is the only female Lecturer in Nigeria that is happy to be a Lecturer.

“Other female I have seen is either frowning always or has anger issues.”

Young Lyf on TikTok said, “This is social media Lecturer, nawa ooo”
