Ramadan to begin Friday as Sultan calls on Muslims to search for New Moon

The Sultanate Council has officially announced that Friday, February 28, will mark the commencement of the search for the new moon of Ramadan 1446AH.

In a statement released Thursday, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, urged Muslims to observe the sky for the new moon on Friday.

He instructed those who spot the moon to report their sightings to the nearest District or Village Head.

Once reported, the sightings will be relayed to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who also serves as the President of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, for a formal declaration.
