Stampede kills 15 people at New Delhi train station

A stampede at New Delhi’s main railway station on Saturday night killed 15 people and injured another 15, as pilgrims waited to board trains for the Hindu Maha Kumbh festival.

Authorities stated on Sunday that the incident occurred around 2000 local time (1430 GMT) on two platforms as passengers waited to board trains to Prayagraj city, where the festival is taking place.

According to local media, the fatalities included ten women and three children.

Delhi’s chief minister, Atishi, who only uses one name, told reporters that 15 people had died while local media reported that the death toll had risen to 18.

She said on X that many of the victims were pilgrims on their way to the festival.

“Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on X.

Meanwhile, authorities have ordered an investigation into the incident, saying that the situation was now under control.
