Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, has said that President Bola Tinubu is aware of the difficulties Nigerians are facing and is working to address them.
This statement counters social media criticism suggesting that Tinubu is indifferent to the country’s challenges.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Onanuga dismissed the nickname “T-Pain,” which has been used online to criticise Tinubu’s leadership. He reiterated that the President is focused on improving Nigeria’s economic situation.
“President Tinubu understands the challenges Nigerians are facing and assures them that relief is on the way,” Onanuga stated. “Some have mockingly called him ‘T-pain,’ but that’s not who he is. He’s here to heal the nation, not cause harm.”
Onanuga’s remarks come in the wake of widespread discontent over Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange rate. These reforms have led to significant hikes in food, fuel, and other living costs, fueling public frustration.
Despite the backlash, Onanuga defended the reforms, asserting that they are necessary to “repair the economy” and are not intended to cause hardship.
“The President has been clear that he understands the current hardships, and he’s working round the clock to provide relief and ensure a prosperous future for Nigeria,” he said.
Even amid soaring inflation and high living expenses, Onanuga highlighted signs of economic recovery, including increased revenue and a brighter economic outlook. He described the current phase as a “painful transition” but insisted it is a crucial step for long-term economic stability.
While protests have erupted in recent months, with citizens demanding a rollback of the economic changes, Onanuga underscored that the administration remains firm, viewing the reforms as key to sustainable growth.
