UN reacts to killing of ’40 farmers’ in Borno

…says ‘Perpetrators must face justice’

The United Nations (UN) has requested that non-state actors who reportedly murdered 40 farmers in Dumba, Kukawa LGA, Borno state, be apprehended and brought to justice.

The farmers were slain on January 12 by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) members after a dispute regarding levies payment.

The incident was described as horrible by Mohamed Fall, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, in a statement issued Wednesday.

He also expressed his sympathies to the departed families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“I am horrified by the recent mass killing of fishermen and farmers in Kukawa. Several people remain missing following the attack, which occurred on Jan. 12,” he said.

“The armed actors who perpetrated these attacks must be identified and brought to account.

“This attack serves as another grim reminder of the profound dangers civilians in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states continue to face.”
