Nigerian singer and songwriter, Fireboy DML, has shared a candid account of his difficult past, revealing that he nearly resorted to selling rechargeable lamps under Lagos’ Ajah bridge before finding success in the music industry.
In a recent interview on the 90s Baby Show in London, Fireboy opened up about the struggles he faced before being signed to YBNL Nation, the record label founded by Olamide.
Fireboy revealed that he took on various menial jobs to make ends meet, some of which his parents were unaware of.
He considered selling rechargeable lamps under Ajah Bridge as a more dignified option, but his life took a turn for the better when he received a WhatsApp message from Olamide, offering him a record deal with YBNL Nation.
Fireboy said “Thank God for Olamide signing me. I was considering selling rechargeable lamps. I met one guy under Ajah Bridge who was telling me about the business, and I told him I was interested.
“To me, at the time, it was more dignified. At least, people will say you sell lamps. But selling pepper soup is crazy, bro. My parents didn’t know I was doing menial jobs. It was crazy but now, we thank God.”
Fireboy’s breakthrough came in 2018 when his hit track “Jealous” was featured on YBNL’s collaborative album YBNL Mafia Family.
His debut studio album “Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps” was released in 2019 to widespread recognition, cementing his place in the Nigerian music scene.
